Pagodas enshrining the sacred bodily relics of the Buddha, the Supreme Teacher of the Three Worlds, are known as Śārīrika Chaitya. The Great Stupa situated within the premises of our temple stands in an exceptionally peaceful environment. It is a sacred field of merit where devotees can cultivate spiritual devotion and mental serenity by offering lamps, flowers, and incense.
The sacred Bodhi Tree planted within our temple premises, grown from a sapling of the revered Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura, under which the Buddha attained Supreme Enlightenment, is known as a Paribhogika Chaitya (a place of veneration associated with the Buddha’s use). It is an exceptionally peaceful and serene place for devotees who come to perform Bodhi Pujas and meditate seated beneath the sacred Bodhi Tree.
Buddha statues created in honour of the Buddha, along with Dhamma halls and other commemorative religious structures, are classified as Uddesika Chaityas. The main Buddha statue, depicted in the Samādhi Mudrā (meditation posture), is enshrined within the Vihara Mandiraya. The shrine also features beautiful paintings and illustrations depicting the Jātaka stories and significant events in the life of the Buddha.
Chief Patron of Sri Lanka Dhammaduta Yogashramaya
As one of the founding venerable monks of our Temple, for many years He has rendered a tremendous service in propagating the noble Saddhamma throughout the world and towards the progress of the temple and the Sasana.
Head of the Yogashramaya, Sri Lanka Dhammaduta Yogashramaya
Giving priority to practice-oriented offerings (prathipaththi pooja), conducting meditation programs and Dhamma sermons, He leads all the sasana activities of the Utuwankanda Dhammadutha Yogashramaya forward.
The Historical Journey of Utuwankanda Sri Lanka Dhammadutha Yogashramaya
The dedication of a valuable land situated in the village of Utuwankanda, close to the 51st post on the Colombo-Kandy main road, to the Sambuddha Sasana took place on March 25, 1969.
This noble meritorious act was performed under the guidance and patronage of Mahakammatthanacharya Most Ven. Kapugampola Ananda Maithree Maha Thero, Chief Patron of the Dhammadutha Society of the Sri Kalyani All Ceylon United Maha Sheela Meditation Organization and Habbelikauda Aranya Senasanadhipathi. Based on this meritorious land dedicated to the Sambuddha Sasana by the devout couple Mr. and Mrs. D.F.J. Dharmadasa, the Utuwankanda Sri Lanka Dhammadutha Yogashramaya was established for sasana and spiritual activities as well as for the meditation training and usage of yogis (yogavacarayan).
Ever since its inception, this ashram has been dedicated to propagating Buddhism among local and foreign people, meditation training, Dhamma study, spiritual development, and various sasana services.
To this day, this sacred place continues to be maintained as a sasana center serving the perpetuity of the Buddha Sasana, Dhamma propagation, and the spiritual progress of yogis.
Utuwankanda Sri Lanka Dhammadutha Yogashramaya has played a uniquely significant role during various occasions throughout its history as an important center for Buddhist sasana and spiritual activities. Within the sasana journey of this sacred place, the dedication and visionary leadership of the Viharadhipathi Theros deserve special mention.
Following the passing away of Mahakammatthanacharya Most Ven. Kapugampola Ananda Maithree Maha Thero, Sasthrapathi Most Ven. Embilipitiye Sumanasiri Thero assumed the position of Viharadhipathi of the Dhammadutha Yogashramaya. Under His leadership, the religious and sasana activities of the temple were continuously maintained.
Later, in accordance with His own will in the year 2016, this sacred place was presented to the Regional Sangha Sabha of the Sri Lanka Ramanna Maha Nikaya, and upon its approval, handed over to the Chief Sangha Nayaka of Southern Sri Lanka, Most Ven. Dr. Omalpe Sobhita Nayaka thero.
From then until May 2025, Dr. Most Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha Nayaka Thero held the position of Viharadhipathi of the Utuwankanda Dhammadutha Yogashramaya, providing leadership for the religious, educational, dhammadutha, and social service activities of the temple. Under His advice, the long-standing sasana services of Ven. Sasthrapathi Ranne Indasara, Hon. Sasthravedhi Wijeriye Wimala, and Dhammadhacariya Panapitiye Samithananda Theros contributed to making this sacred place a more comprehensive center for Dhamma propagation and social service.
The special grand assembly held at the Magampura Rajapaksa International Conference Hall in Hambantota on the occasion of the 75th birthday anniversary of Dr. Most Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha Nayaka Thero became a very special occasion in the history of this temple.
At that event, held with the participation of the President, Maha Nayaka Theros and the Maha Sangha, lay devotees, and distinguished invitees, Dr. Most Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha Nayaka Thero appointed His beloved disciple, Ven. Sasthrapathi Ranne Indasara Thero, to the office of Viharadhipathi of the Utuwankanda Sri Lanka Dhammadutha Yogashramaya.
This appointment is not merely a change in the Viharadhipathi office, but can also be considered as handing over the sasana responsibility descending through the preceptor-pupil lineage to a new generation. Accordingly, under the leadership of Ven. Sasthrapathi Ranne Indasara Thero, the Utuwankanda Dhammadutha Yogashramaya entered a new era.
Along with assuming the new Viharadhipathi office, the primary objective of the Utuwankanda Dhammadutha Yogashramaya is to preserve the fundamental teachings of Buddhism and bring them closer to the people in a practical manner suited for modern society.
The objective is to dedicate this sacred place further to public service through Dhamma education, monk education, dhammadutha service, meditation programs, Dhamma schools and children's education activities, social welfare services, and the development of international Buddhist relations.
Accepting the sasana responsibility inherited from the preceptor lineage with respect, protecting the past heritage while creating new opportunities for future generations is the main goal of this new chapter.
Accordingly, the Utuwankanda Dhammadutha Yogashramaya will continue to move forward as a sacred place dedicated to the perpetuity of the Buddha Sasana, Dhamma propagation, spiritual development, and humanitarian social service.
The honorable Dayaka Sabha and executive committee dedicated to working for the progress of the temple and the Sasana.
Ever since the inception of the Dhammadutha Maha Viharaya in 1969, the Dayaka Sabha has made a exceptional contribution towards continuously carrying out the religious, social, and development activities of the temple. Mr. D. F. J. Dharmadasa served as the first President of the temple and Mr. H. G. Vaidyarathna Muhandiram served as the first Secretary, and subsequently, under the leadership and support of various Dayaka Sabha officials, the temple activities were systematically moved forward.
During the period when the temple was handed over to Most Ven. Omalpe Sobhitha Nayaka Thero in 2016, Mrs. Surasa Uyana Bandaranaike served as the President of the Dayaka Sabha. During that period, the support of the Dayaka Sabha was vital for the administrative and development activities of the temple.
In recent times, during the period when chaithya development activities took place, the Dayaka Sabha functioned under the presidency of Mr. Chandrarathna. Thereafter up to the present day, under the presidency of Mr. Amarathilaka, the development activities, administration, and management of the temple are maintained much more methodically and in an organized manner.
Mrs. Chandrika serves as the Secretary of the present Dayaka Sabha, and Mrs. Dilshani Ehalepola serves as the Treasurer, fulfilling their respective responsibilities.
The Dayaka Sabha also possesses an Executive Committee consisting of members representing the relevant administrative divisions of the temple. Through this committee, representing the views and needs of the local devotees, support is provided to plan and execute the religious, educational, social, and physical development activities of the temple.
The main objective of the Dhammadutha Maha Viharastha Dayaka Sabha is to act with collective responsibility and dedication for the prosperity of the temple, the perpetuity of the Buddha Sasana, and the spiritual and social welfare of the local residents.
